I think these guys have spent waaaay too much time making googly faces at the enemy from behind the crenellations. But then, pacing those straight lines up and back on guard duty certainly leaves room for a wee bit of prankery.
And I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if indeed it is silliness, in the end, that saves us all from ourselves.
